3 things you should know to expand your business in Japan

If you want to expand your business in Japan, there are some rules you should keep in your mind. Wherever you go, there’s local culture and unspoken rules in business you should follow. In Japan, these 3 words are very important to achieve your business.

It’s a Japanese word. It means basically connection. But “En” has a slightly different nuance. En is like a gifted connection, destined connection, connection we need to value like or not. When we have a connection with someone and we feel it’s very special, we think “It must be En.” Therefore, we’re likely to avoid to break off En. When you have a new connection with your potential business partners in Japan, once you can make them feel “It’s En”, you can embrace long time partnership.

#Gaman

Gaman means exactly patience. When you try to make the business deal with Japanese partners, you have to be patient in many ways. It takes time to make a decision. Many people get involved in business deal and who’s going to make a decision is uncertain. “We’re going to buy your service.” often turns out to be a hanging promise.Everything is Gaman. But Gaman is a process that is needed to achieve. By sharing Gaman with all stakeholders, things work out in Japan. So, you should be willing to be part of Gaman.

#Jingi

After Gaman, you will be blessed. Because Japanese esteem “Jingi”. Jingi is very difficult to translate in English. It means a rigorous policy that compels us to value En and prevents us from betraying. When we try to do something unauthentic, we think “It’s against Jingi” and withstand it, even it takes cost. Keeping Jing is more important rather than personal interest for Japanese.

So, once you weave En with your Japanese partner and if you can embrace Gaman, your business in Japan will be prosperous assured by Jingi.
